Write. And be understood.Beta access available
01/ 12What it is

Cipher finds what you can’t see in your own writing, and tells you what to do about it.

You write however you like. No tagging, no linking, no filing. Days or months later it surfaces a pattern you were too close to notice, names what is actually driving it, and says what to try next.

Three entries init has a guess.Thirty init has your pattern.

What comes back. Not a score, not a summary.

02/ 12The problem

You already worked this out once. You just can’t find it.

Three weeks later the same problem comes round, and you meet it without the thinking you already did.

You notice something, write it down, and close the entry. Nothing was connecting one entry to the next, so the work you did the first time stayed where you left it.

Eight months agoTodayWhat you still recall

Every mark is an entry. The glow is roughly how far back you can still reach.

Write.
And be understood.

Your own writing, finally saying something back.
03/ 12What you actually get

What came back changed the question you were asking.

A real entry, and what came back. Both unedited.

You wrote this

Third good session this month and I still cannot name why

“It is not time of day. It is not sleep. It is not how interesting the task is, because the pricing copy was dull and that one went fine.”

No links. No folders. One tag you chose.
It looked across

This entry, against 14 others

Nothing was linked to anything. It read them anyway, while the tab was closed.

Then it said

“Finding what the three good mornings share can produce false leads. The signal is difference between successful and unsuccessful starts.”

So do this next“Make the comparison explicit rather than rely on retrospective impressions.”

04/ 12Argue with it

You can ask it where that came from.

It reached this while you were away. Ask where it came from, what to do with it, or what it is missing, and it answers from what you have already written.

You asked

“Where did this come from? Which entries made you think it.”

Cipher answered

“It came from the contrast between successful and unsuccessful mornings, plus the fact that you only notice success after the work is already underway. I wasn’t pulling from a hidden extra source; I was combining the lines you already gave.

Cited back from your own entries“three this month that actually worked”“a lot of mornings that did not”“by the time I notice it was a good one I am already busy with the thing it produced”
Lines you wroteThe answer

“I’m not claiming those lines prove a single cause.”

05/ 12What it will not claim

It tells you what it is not claiming.

Anything can say something true-sounding about you. The difference is whether it shows you where it got that, and where it stops.

What it told you

“You clear your email when the work in front of you is hard.”

What sits under it
01
So you can check it against what you actually wrote

“got to inbox zero before lunch, felt great, wrote nothing”
“the migration doc has been open in a tab since Tuesday”

02
So you know how much weight to give it
94%
evidence quality + pattern consistency + context + clarity
03
So you do not read more into it than it found

“I’m not claiming email is the cause.”

“Only that it keeps turning up on the days the hard thing does not get started.”

You can get all three for anything it tells you. The last one is the part most things leave out.

06/ 12Anything you write

It does not care what you write about.

Work, thinking, mood, the people around you. The mechanism does not change: you write however you like, nothing gets filed, and what comes back is a pattern and something to do about it.

across 9 entries · 4 months

“You reopen the same three decisions every quarter and argue them from scratch.”

So do this next“Before the next one, write down what actually changed since the last time you decided it.”

across 23 entries · 7 months

“You only call a day good if it produced something. The days you thought well and made nothing are missing from your notes.”

So do this next“Write one line at the end of a day that made nothing.”

across 14 entries · 3 months

“Sunday evenings carry something you never mention again on Monday.”

So do this next“Write on a Sunday at eight, for one week, before it becomes Monday.”

across 31 entries · 1 year

“You are sharpest the day after you see people, and flattest the day after you cancel.”

So do this next“Next time you want to cancel, write that down, and read it again two days later.”

Four illustrations, in Cipher’s own format. In each one nothing was tagged or linked, and nobody asked it anything.

07/ 12The difference

It works when you are not looking.

You do not have to remember to come back and check.

You write, close the tab, and get on with the day. You are never asked to sit through questions first.

The gap is the point. Nothing is asked of you inside it.

Cipher runs in any browser. Add it to your home screen and the nudges land on your phone.

Getting it down

You don’t have to work out how to begin.

Say what kind of entry this is and the page arrives framed. No template to fill in and no fields to satisfy. Just a shape to write against, which you can ignore.

It is the same reason the rest of it has no tags and no folders. The work of writing should be the writing.

Where it stops remembering

It forgets what it worked out about you. On purpose.

A picture of who you were a year ago should not keep steering what it tells you now. So the interpretation expires and rebuilds itself from what you are writing today.
